You can’t always get what you want

But if you try sometimes… I went out recently to shoot planes at the Pacific Air Show in Huntington Beach, CA. It’s been an annual tradition for several years despite the show not changing much from year-to-year. Heck, I even bought tickets this year so I could be closer to a bathroom and food. Maybe in that order, maybe not. But it was a gloriously warm and sunny day when I left home in the Pasadena area, but by the time I got to the beach, the coast was foggier than a preacher’s glasses in a whorehouse. Visibility? Gone. Planes? Nada.

Now, this isn’t a political website, and I won’t air my politics here (well, maybe a little), but people are a little nuts in Huntington Beach. Nuts for Trump, that is. I think it was actually an “Asians for Trump” rally—most of whom seemed to be of Vietnamese decent as far as I could tell, with a sprinkling of some crazy white folk. One white guy was yelling, “No voodoo in America! Look it up! They’re eating our dogs and cats! No voodoo in America!”—all while choking down what appeared to be a hot dog. Now I’d say that’s as goddamned American in 2024 as any F-22 Raptor!

As I stood there, trying to make sense of the scene, I realized: sometimes you go out looking for American military muscle but end up with a front-row seat to the circus instead. Not exactly what I came for, but hey, sometimes, you get what you need.
